Profiles in Preservation
Al Poncia Ranch, Tomales
The Poncia Ranch has been in the family since 1933 when it was purchased
by Angelo Poncia, an Italian immigrant. The gently sloping land
borders Stemple Creek which flows into the Estero de San Antonio
and drains into the Pacific Ocean. Today the ranch is operated by
Angelo's grandson, Al Poncia, who raises beef cattle and leases
the dairy to another rancher. MALT purchased an easement on the
268-acre ranch in 1992, permanently preserving it for agriculture
use.
"Today I look at it for my son and maybe
his children. Thanks to MALT, the place is here, so the opportunity
is there for the next generation."
