Ellen Straus Farmland Preservation Fund
Escalating land values can make the sale of farmland for non-agricultural
use a tempting alternative to the risks of small-scale farming.
Marin Agricultural Land Trust's ability to offer a conservation
alternative to the sale or development of farmland is crucial to
the future of agriculture in Marin County. Thanks to a $10 million
capital campaign completed successfully in 2002, MALT was able to
preserve an additional 6,000 acres of Marin farmland. A window of
opportunity now exists to protect 12,000 more acres. MALT’s
goal is to raise $30 million—the estimated cost of acquiring
easements on those 12,000 acres to permanently protect them from
development. Such an ambitious campaign will require the support
of all MALT’s friends and supporters.
Your help is the key to our success.
Contributions to the Ellen Straus Farmland Preservation Fund are
applied directly to the cost of purchasing these agricultural conservation
easements. These contributions enable MALT to:
- Purchase conservation easements on the
most threatened properties
- Add more acres to the critical mass of permanently protected
Marin farmland
- Match state, federal, and other sources of public conservation
funding
- Help preserve Marin's 150-year old heritage of family farming
